Jump around – Introducing seeking in online recording sessions

One take recordings are so 1990. This is why we are introducing seeking in online recording sessions. What does this mean? Any mishap in your last wonderful take? Just jump to the respective position in the song and re-record it. Here’s how it works.

Just record it in steps

You asked for it and we deliver: You are able now to seek in recordingson sofasession. Finally, no need anymore for one-take recordings (they suck anyway).

You can jump to any position of an online recording session and just record from there. It makes contributing to songs much easier and quicker.

How does seeking in online recording sessions work?

Let’s assume you have found a song to which you would like to contribute. We have this nice Jazz song which is trending now on the frontpage, so we are going to contribute to this one.

Select a song and load it into your song session

Just click on the “Contribute” icon in the song player.

In case you have not yet installed the sofasession software / client, you will be prompted to download and install the software. It will allow you to record your contributions on sofasession, as well as making live online sessions with other musicians on sofasession.
Or just download it here.

Record your first take

You will be directed into the song session, where all tracks of the song are being loaded. Once the loading process has finished, you will be able to start the recording of your first take. Just click the record button.

After you have finished your recording, click the stop button and your first take will appear in your session window.

Seek and Destroy – seeking

Let’s assume you didn’t record the second verse, because you want to do it in a separate take. Just skip to the section by clicking on the timeline of the song (the green bar). The song will be playing back from this position. When you hit record again, recording will start exactly from the position you have selected.

Seek the right position, hit record, sing or play your instrument, hit stop. And the track will appear as a separate take

As soon as you’re done, you will see a second take appear. You can now listen back to your whole song and decide which take you want to keep.

Select the take and upload it

So, we decided to keep Take number 2. So let’s upload it! Click on the “Upload Take” button on Take 2.

Click on the "Upload Take" button, give it a title and comment and select the instrument and then click "Save".Click on the "Upload Take" button, give it a title and comment and select the instrument and then click "Save".

In the next step you should give your Take a name (“Take 2″ is not really appealing), give it a description, if you like and select the instrument (in this case it would be vocals). Hit “Save” to finalize the process and save your new Contribution! (Yay!)
Of course you can also upload other tracks, if you wish. Just repeat the process with another take that you want to save.

Go give it a try

Now that we have shown you how the new seeking function works, why don’t go out and give it a try! It’s fun.
If you have followed our blog lately, you will know that Stone Temple Pilots are auditioning for a new singer. If you like their songs, it’s a good thing to try it out! Why not contribute something to this song and test out the new seeking feature? You can give it as many tries as you want now!

And this ends the presentation of our new feature “seeking in online recording sessions”.
Enjoy and love from all of us at sofasession!
